Frequently Asked Questions

Is there anything I should tell my Esthetician before the waxing begins?
Because we care about your health and the integrity of your skin, Stark Waxing Studio will not perform waxing treatments if: You are currently using Retin – A, Differin, Accutane . It's important for you to tell your Esthetician if you have taken antibiotics in the six weeks prior to your waxing appointment, -- or if you have taken any other medications with side effects that include (for example) dry mouth, dehydration. This includes over-the-counter medication that are known blood thinners, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Midol, and Tylenol.

Are there any anti-aging, anti-acne, medications or cosmetics I should tell my Esthetician I use before the waxing begins?
Many facial creams, washes, peels, serums, and gels contain ingredients that can make the skin sensitive to waxing. Often these kinds of facial products have retinoid, Retin-A, Renova, accutane, and alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA's) including glycolic acid. A short discussion with your Esthetician about what you are using is imperative.
Is there anything I can do to prepare for a bikini wax?
For optimum waxing results your hair needs to be at least a 1/4 of an inch long.  If you normally shave, stop at least 3 weeks before coming in for waxing. Between your waxing appointments we recommend that you dry exfoliate your skin. Dry exfoliation sloughs off dead skin, allows new hair to grow and not get trapped, and overall it will help you maintain smoother, softer and healthier skin.
Is there anything I should NOT do before a wax appointment?
Limit the amount of caffeine or alcohol, since both can cause your skin to be dehydrated, more inflamed and more sensitive. Do not go tanning, do not soak in a hot tub, and most importantly, do not shave.

Why does Stark use the blue hard wax in sensitive areas like the face and the bikini area?
Hard wax works best on coarse hair and in sensitive areas because as it cools and hardens it grabs the hair and lifts it up off of the skin. When it’s removed it only grabs the hair and doesn't pull on the skin. Our clients agree, the blue wax really does take the “ouch” out of waxing.

What is the difference between Full Brazilians and Partial Brazilians?
A Full Brazilian is to remove all the hair from the labia and back side. We can leave a strip, a "bush," or a triangle in the front, depending on your preference. Either way, we're still removing the hair all around.
A Partial Brazilian is the same, but removing the hair from the labia OR the back side. It's your choice. Be sure to explain what you want to the Esthetician before they get started. They want you to feel great with the service, and get the results you want.
Do you do Male Brazilians?
Yes, at Stark at Face Place in West Hollywood, and Stark at Face Place in New York.

What should I do if I’m scared or nervous?
If you have never been waxed before you might be scared or nervous, but when you come to Stark you are seeing skilled professionals. We use the finest quality wax specially formulated for sensitive skin, and our estheticians can walk you through the service at the pace that feels right for you.

Do you double dip?
No, we do not double dip on soft tissue areas. We use a stick one time, and then it’s thrown away. We take extra care to be clean and professional. You notice the difference.

Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, we take walk-ins, but we recommend making an appointment if you can.

How is Stark different than other waxing salons?
We use high quality imported wax that is formulated for sensitive skin. We pride ourselves on being professional and efficient and we strive to make waxing something you actually look forward to.

What can I do after a waxing appointment to soothe my skin?
We apply a post-treatment oil that is enriched with lavender and peppermint to soothe the skin. If you experience extended redness we find that applying hydrocortisone cream can help. Do not exfoliate your skin for two days after your waxing treatment. After the initial 48 hours post waxing, we encourage daily dry exfoliation to inhibit ingrowns.

How do I prevent ingrowns?
We recommend dry exfoliation. When you dry exfoliate you are removing the top layer of dead skin, allowing new hair to grow free, and not get trapped. Using a scrub or exfoliating mitt between your appointments helps to reduce ingrown hairs.

How long should I wait to book my next appointment?
We recommend you come in every 3 to 6 weeks.  Make sure your hair growth is at least a 1/4 of an inch.

What are the benefits of waxing over shaving?
Waxing removes hair at the root, and after consistent waxing the hair begins to grow in finer. Consistent waxing exfoliates the skin, and can also result in softer and smoother skin. Hair that is a at least a quarter inch long when it’s waxed typically won't begin to grow back for two weeks. Shaving cuts the hair at a blunt angle causing stubble. Shaving does not pull the hair out at the root so the hair begins to grow back within hours.

Does Stark Waxing Studio offer any other services other than waxing?
We do eyelash tinting and eyebrow tinting at all Stark locations. You can get a Face Place facial at Stark at Face Place in West Hollywood, and Stark at Face Place in New York. The Face Place facial is a signature deep pore extraction facial that hydrates, rejuvenates, and firms your skin with Vitamin C and Yucca root.
